Our Crops
What We Grow
-
A crop that is primarily grown for its seeds, which are small, shiny, and typically yellow or brown in color. Canary seed is commonly used as food for birds, particularly canaries, hence its name. However, canary seed is also becoming increasingly popular as a human food source due to its high protein content and gluten-free nature.
-
Canola is generally our largest acreage crop and is primarily grown for its seed, which are used to produce canola oil. Canola is a member of the Brassica family, which also includes broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Grandpa Carter was the first farmer to grow Canola in the County of Provost. It was so new at the time that our provincial crop insurance Insurance would not even cover it.
At C2 Farms we grow some specialty canola varieties such as the L258 which is a high health variety producing the lowest saturated fat content.
-
A type of legume that is high in protein, fiber, and several important vitamins and minerals. Chickpeas are often used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine and can be cooked in a variety of ways, such as in soups, stews, and salads.
We began growing Chickpeas in 2016 as a way to diversify our crop rotation, enhance soil health and help with risk management on our farms.
-
Durum wheat is a variety of spring wheat that’s typically ground into semolina and used to make pasta. It can also be ground into a finer flour and used to make bread or pizza dough
Durum is generally our second largest acreage crop. A lot of our land is well suited for growing high protein Durum Wheat.
-
A type of wheat that is planted in the spring and harvested in the summer or fall. Hard Red Spring wheat is typically used for making bread and other baked goods and has a lower protein content than durum wheat.
-
Another type of legume that is also high in protein, fiber, and nutrients such as iron and folate. Lentils are commonly used in Indian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean cuisine, and can be cooked in a variety of dishes such as soups, stews, and curries.
We always seed Lentils at our farms. They are staple in our crop rotation. We grow at least two varieties with both Green and Red Lentils.
-
A variety of barley that is used in the production of malt, which is used in the brewing of beer and whiskey. Malt barley is distinguished from other types of barley by its higher starch content and lower protein content.
Malt Barley is often in our rotation as one of our cereals, but not a large percentage of our acres.
-
A plant that is grown for its seeds, which are used to make mustard condiments. Mustard is a member of the Brassica family and is closely related to canola.
-
A type of pea that is often grown for animal feed but is also used in human consumption in soups, stews, and curries. Yellow peas are a good source of protein and fiber.
